Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric forklifts is supplied by large industrial batteries that need to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety procedures should always be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is essential to check battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is important for workers working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG comprise safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place should be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the station should not be obstructed and a worker who is injured should be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When near a battery and charging area, open flames are not allowed. Do not permit objects such as lighters or matches to be used while someone is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be properly ventilated. The recharging process could release gas. These fumes are both explosive and poisonous.
