A stock picker, also referred to as an order picker is a machine that is quite like a forklift. It enables the operator to utilize forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some items, and this feature is something the forklift does not offer. Typically, order pickers are operated by electricity. These type of machines are mostly used in a warehouse setting. Usually they are used for moving pallets and doing specific tasks in the shelving and stocking department.
The order picker operator utilizes controls to control the unit from a platform setting which usually sits quite close to the ground. The operator is able to direct the equipment to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the forks can be lifted up to the required level that makes it very convenient for the operator. Like for instance, if the required materials, are situated on a shelf that the operator could not reach, then entire platform could be raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then directed or driven to its next location. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, although, some companies may have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker could also place pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers may be used to finish these specific tasks at several companies instead.
