Tower Crane Parts

Tower cranes allow the construction industry to build some incredible structures. These cranes have been designed to reach ever-increasing heights. Tower cranes offer the way to lift and transport tools, building parts and supplies all around a construction location. There are various parts which assemble a tower crane when they are put together. Putting a tower crane together uses various pieces of construction equipment.

Base

The tower crane base is typically made from a steel unit. The base of the unit attaches to a custom pad made of concrete. This kind of set-up gives the structure stability. Overall, the construction must be engineered and built well so as to operate at optimum safety.

Mast

The tower crane's mast provides the machine with its overall height. The mast is built out of separate steel sections that are attached together. The amount of parts determines the crane's height. Normally, a tower crane has a design which enables the mast to grow during construction by adding more sections as the building process continues. This way the height of the crane can be specified, making certain that it has sufficient height to safely and efficiently perform the needed work.

Slewing Unit/Top Climber

A slewing unit is situated over the mast. This unit houses the equipment and the motor which enables the crane to rotate. A top climber is the piece of equipment that allows the mast to grow. The top climber is located just underneath the slewing unit. Hydraulic rams inside the top climber enable the slewing unit to be disconnected from the mast by raising it higher.

Boom

"Boom" is a term which particularly refers to the working arm of a tower crane. The boom is made of steel parts connected together, which extend out from the top of the slewing unit, parallel to the ground. There is a trolley connected to the underside that could run the length of the boom. This trolley has the hoisting device.
