Forklift Components in More Detail
There are many parts which make up a lift truck. The forklifts major components comprise the truck frame, the engine parts, the overhead guard, the tilt cylinders and the wheels. Additionally, a forklift has a variety of attachments. All the parts that make up a lift truck are all important since they work together to make the functions of the machinery possible. The next paragraphs describe some of the lift truck parts in detail.
The Overhead Guard - this guard forms the forklift truck's metal roof. It sits on top of the cab area and protects the equipment operator while she or he is sitting and driving. The overhead guard makes sure that nothing falling from above onto the truck would damage the controls in the cab or hurt the driver. The overhead guard is essential to the frame assembly on several units.
The Mast - the mast is a vertical assembly made of interlocking rails and mounted either to the front axle or the forklift frame. The mast provides lateral stability and enables the forks to move up and downwards. The interlocking rails could either have rollers or bushings as guides. There are a couple of ways the mast can be operated: chain operated with motive power provided by a hydraulic motor or hydraulically by one or more hydraulic cylinders.
Lift Truck Carriage - The carriage is the part that the forks and other types of attachments are mounted to. The carriage is in fact directly attached to the hydraulic cylinder and is connected by chains. To enable the forks to be lowered and raised, the carriage can have either bushings or rollers to guide it in the interlocking mast rails.
Load Back Rest - When the carriage is lifted to full height, there is a back rest made of metal that keeps a load from falling backwards. The back rest is either welded or bolted on to the carriage.
Lift Truck Attachments - There are many kinds of attachments that can be fixed directly to the lift truck's carriage. Forks are the most common attachment. Also, there are L-shaped members, rotators, rollers, pole handlers, roll clamps and and all that. These various types of attachments are very helpful for transporting different types of loads.
